Joyce Babatunde is an Afrosoul artist from Cameroon, who glides seamlessly from singing to rapping and; to Spoken word poetry, without missing a beat.
Born on January 9th, 1990, Joyce fell in love with music and art from a tender age. She therefore decided after her Master’s degree in Law from the University of Yaounde 2 in 2015; to turn this love into a full-time commitment and pursue a professional career in music.
In 2018, she became a laureate of the prestigious Goethe Decouverte program, which had been in operation since 2015. Crafted with the objectives of supporting young talents by rousing interest for their work in the music marketplace and; providing them with tools to start up a professional career, this win was the perfect introduction for Joyce.
Chosen in the music category, she has from there, gone on to imbibe her unique signature on countless stages in and out of Cameroon with an incredible stage presence, powerful wordplay, and sonic eclecticism.
She has officially released 5 singles and a most recent groundbreaking maiden album entitled “Kwacoco Bible”. It is an odyssey of hope, resilience, and audacity; and was produced with the partnership of the Institut Français du Cameroun and the Goethe Institut.
ARTISTRY
Joyce Babatunde’s music is a fusion of genres. While being rooted fundamentally in Soul, it is equally largely experimental. It incorporates elements of Hip-Hop, Jazz, Blues, RnB and also leans heavily on African rhythmic patterns as well as chants. Thus creating a one-of-a-kind contemporary cocktail which she chose to call Afrosoul.
In addition to being a singer/songwriter and composer, she equally writes and performs spoken word poetry; especially as a form of artivism. With this, she chooses to mirror society, broaches pertinent subjects and engage her audience; all the while, inviting them to introspection and reflection, for a better today and tomorrow.
The ocus of her art as a whole, is to show the power of our individual uniqueness; and how when properly understood and harnessed can be used to create a positive impact in the world. This philosophy is what she calls ” The Masterpiece Mentality” and is driven home in all of her artistic expressions.
